January 31 Locking up Visio for Enterprise Architects on x64Visio for Enterprise Architects is a wonderful little tool to play with - when it works. Astute observers know I recently upgraded to Windows XP Pro 64-bit.
Visio... decided it wanted to lock up every time I tried to open a "Database" diagram. This was frustrating - most of why I use Visio is to view or create such diagrams.
After some research and another obscure forum post, I learned that there is a problem with Visio and...... the Print Spooler service. Apparently when you initially load the database diagram, Visio wants to ennumerate your printers - and on 64-bit it won't happen and the program locks up.
Solution - stop the Print Spooler service before opening a database diagram in Visio. Once you have it opened you can turn Print Spooler back on...
I made a handy little .bat file on my desktop that simply executes:
net stop "Print Spooler"
and another that starts it back up.
Minor inconvenience that's apparently been around for quite a while.
